How to Follow Up With Leads on WhatsApp Without Being Blocked

WhatsApp has 90%+ open rates — but one wrong message and you're blocked. Here is the follow-up cadence that Indian SMBs use to stay on the right side of Meta's quality score and still convert.

Quick answer

The safe WhatsApp follow-up cadence is: instant auto-greeting, human reply within 5 minutes, then 1–2 messages per week thereafter, capped at 7 total touches across 21 days. Each touch should alternate between value and gentle pitch. Include a clear opt-out by touch 7. Stop the cadence the moment the lead replies.

The rules Meta enforces (and what they really mean)

Quality score per phone number. Meta scores your number Green / Yellow / Red based on user reports, block rates, and opt-out rates. Yellow throttles your daily sending. Red can suspend.

Session window (24 hours). Once a user messages you, you have 24 hours to reply with anything (text, image, voice). After that, only pre-approved templates.

Template categories. Three types: utility (transactional, cheap), authentication (OTP, cheap), marketing (promotional, expensive, requires opt-in).

Opt-in requirement. Marketing templates need explicit opt-in. "User filled my form" is opt-in for utility messages about that form's content. It is not opt-in for unrelated marketing.

The follow-up cadence by lead temperature

Hot lead (Score 50+)

  • Touch 1: Instant auto-greeting
  • Touch 2: Human reply within 5 minutes
  • Touch 3+: Conversational; respond as the buyer replies; no scheduled cadence

If a Hot lead goes silent for 24 hours, downgrade them to Warm and follow the Warm cadence.

Warm lead (Score 20–49)

  • Touch 1: Instant auto-greeting
  • Touch 2: Human reply within 4 hours
  • Touch 3: Day 1 — send portfolio/sample (utility template if outside session window)
  • Touch 4: Day 3 — gentle nudge with social proof
  • Touch 5: Day 7 — time-sensitive offer or scarcity
  • Stop if no reply by Day 14

Cold lead (Score < 20)

  • Touch 1: Instant auto-greeting
  • Touch 2: Human acknowledgement (no call)
  • Touches 3–7: Spaced over 21 days using the 7-touch nurture templates →
  • Final opt-out at touch 7

What signals "stop the cadence immediately"

  • Buyer replies with substance → Pariq's auto-pause kicks in. Reps take over.
  • Buyer replies "STOP", "Not interested", "Don't message" → mark Lost, remove from list.
  • Buyer opens but doesn't reply for 14+ days after touch 7 → Lost, move to quarterly re-engagement.

What gets you in trouble

Sending touch 3 within hours of touch 2. Looks like spam. Space matters.

Reusing the same template across 100 leads at once. Meta flags this as broadcast spam. Use template variants and stagger sends.

Skipping opt-out wording on marketing templates. Users hit "report" instead of "block", which is much worse for your quality score.

Outbound marketing at 11pm. Cultural norm: people read but don't reply. Opt-out rate spikes. Send marketing between 10am and 7pm.

The Pariq default

Pariq ships with this cadence as the default "Lead nurture" workflow. The pause-on-engagement, opt-out detection, and per-template quality-score tracking are built in — you don't have to engineer it.

Frequently asked

How many times can I follow up with a lead on WhatsApp?+

Up to 7 well-spaced touches over 21 days is the safe ceiling. Beyond that, opt-out rates climb fast and Meta's quality score drops, throttling your sending capacity.

How long should I wait between WhatsApp follow-ups?+

Day 1, Day 3, Day 7, Day 14, Day 21 for cold nurture. For active leads (Hot/Warm), respond as soon as the buyer messages; do not schedule outbound during an active conversation.

What gets you blocked on WhatsApp?+

Three behaviors: high opt-out rate (> 3%), marketing template spam without prior opt-in, and messaging outside session windows without an approved utility/marketing template. Meta tracks these per-number quality scores; persistent bad scores result in throttling or number suspension.
